One day, my daughter went to a park afterschool with a friend. Sounds like a normal afternoon. The park was hilly. That’s normal given where we live. It was raining that day. Which was also normal for the time of year. Then she slipped on wet grass and in an attempt to steady herself, she grabbed her friend with enough force that her acrylic nails folded backwards and three natural nails popped right off her fingers! This was definitely not normal.
Then I got a call on her phone. I answered expecting my daughter, except it was the friend calling. It’s not normal for me to hear a stranger on this number who started with the words, “There was an accident…” Without know the situation, my mind went to a dark place. Is my daughter injured to the point she cannot use the phone? Is she unconscious? Is she dead? Then I heard her muted tears in the background. It’s amazing I can still distinguish my child’s cries from all other noises. Must be an evolutionary trait. I stopped the caller and demanded that my daughter talk to me.
The ambulance showed up around the same time as me and while she was tended to medically, I was still unsettled by the phone call. The paramedics discharged her on the spot without a trip to the hospital. I took her home. In the car ride, she sensed I was upset. She apologized for messing up and calling the paramedics. She apologized for ruining the night and having to skip out on swimming practice. She went on but I cut her off.

What I am upset about is you let someone call me when you should have done it. And their first words were ‘there was an accident’…”.
“I’m not upset that you decided to roughhouse on a grassy knoll in the rain. I know you wouldn’t do this on your own and I know you certainly wouldn’t do it with me, but I guess sensibility takes a leave when you’re with friends. I’m not upset that you broke your expensive acrylics including three natural nails. They will heal. I’m also not even upset you called emergency services. That’s why these services exist. And it was good to get medical confirmation you didn’t break anything else. What I am upset about is you let someone call me when you should have done it. And their first words were ‘there was an accident’…”
My daughter instantly understood me. We fell silent. So little was said yet so much was communicated so clearly. Our short drive home was in total silence.
It’s been a decade since my daughter was in daycare and I always dreaded the phone calls from them during the workday. At least they were trained to begin the phone call with ‘your daughter’s fine’. But I always hated when they called because the opening sentence could easily be something else. Though my daughter has outgrown that phase, I haven’t. As a girl dad, her welfare is never a fleeting thought.
She promised me that she wouldn’t let anyone use her phone again to call me.
