Future-proofing: another shoe story

We were at a mall where they were selling Converse shoes and we decided to go in. Deals were good and I grabbed a new pair for me and shiny red pair for my daughter. They had an in-store special and the third pair was discounted to 70% off. So we grabbed a pair of high-cuts for her, also. With the way the store was calculating the discounts, I was $20 away from receiving tiered promotion which essentially meant a free pair. And so I told my daughter to grab a third pair of shoes for herself. Effectively it meant that all four pairs of shoes cost me about $140. For branded Converse, this was a no brainer.  We walked out of the store wearing the shoes we bought and my daughter still had two new pairs in the bag. What a deal!

Look to the future, because that’s where you’ll be living with the decisions you made today.

A month later, I realized that deal wasn’t so great after all. All three pairs of shoes were the same size! She had a favorite pair that she wore all the time, which meant that she was growing out of the other two pairs simultaneously, having barely worn them.

Moral of the story: look to the future, because that’s where you’ll be living with the decisions you made today. You’ve stopped growing, she hasn’t. If you are going to buy multiple pairs of anything, buy them in increasing sizes to stretch out your dollar. So look to tomorrow, it is a very important concept that has numerous value.
